Dancing Through Life at the Phoenix: Meet the Super Sues

Every Tuesday, something magical happens at the Phoenix Theatre in Whitehill. Music fills the space, feet start moving, and laughter echoes from the studio – all thanks to Dance Picnic, a low-impact dance class for adults that’s become so much more than just a weekly workout.

At the heart of it all are two incredible women known fondly as The Super SuesSue Kerr and Sue Williams – who’ve been dancing, laughing, and connecting at the Phoenix since the very beginning.

From Pink Ladies to Pilates: A Decade of Dancing

Sue Kerr and Sue Williams joined Dance Picnic when it first began over 10 years ago, and they haven’t missed a beat since.

“I love this class because I feel that I’m doing some good – nothing too energetic – lovely music and such a happy and relaxed atmosphere,” says Sue Kerr. “And no worries if you go wrong!”

Sue Williams agrees. “It’s such great fun, and it’s a good way to exercise. It helps to improve balance, which is so important as we get older.”

One of their favourite memories? The time the Dance Picnic group transformed into the Pink Ladies for a special open-air cinema screening at the Phoenix.

“The headlights of the cars were shining on us as we danced,” they laugh. “It was absolutely brilliant!”

Why They Keep Coming Back – Every Single Week

For the Super Sues, Dance Picnic is more than a class – it’s a lifeline. “It’s good for the brain,” says Sue Williams. “It keeps us fit, helps with balance, and lifting weights even strengthens the bones.”

“And it’s really good fun,” adds Sue Kerr. “You go away feeling like a new person – even if you weren’t feeling so great beforehand.”

Their dedication speaks volumes – and their calendars are a testament to just how active and involved they both are. From Pilates and Tai Chi to walking groups, volunteering, and WI meetings, they are proof that staying connected keeps you vibrant.

The Heart of the Community

So what keeps them loyal to the Phoenix after all these years?

“It’s just such a friendly, happy place,” says Sue Williams. “There’s something for everyone.”

“It’s wonderful to have somewhere like this nearby,” Sue Kerr adds. “You can call in anytime and feel welcome.”

They describe the Phoenix as essential to the community – not just for entertainment, but for friendship, active living, and feeling involved.

“Whether it’s the classes, the shows, or the cinema, it’s 100% important for community life,” they both agree. “We know almost every face when we come to events now – it’s that kind of place.”

Thinking of Joining? Here’s What the Sues Say

If you’ve ever thought about joining a class or showing up to something at the Phoenix but felt unsure, here’s a direct message from the Super Sues:

“COME!”

“Don’t worry if you’re coming alone – there’s a huge community here and always someone you’ll relate to.”

Their enthusiasm is infectious – and it’s clear they speak from the heart. The Phoenix isn’t just a theatre; it’s a second home to many, and the Super Sues are living proof of the joy that comes from staying active, making friends, and dancing through life.
